THE THREAD | Stay at sea
Hi!
This week I’m sharing a new song called “Stay at Sea”. You can click HERE to listen, and the lyrics are below.
There are so many stories about journeys, adventures, and quests, and often times the narrative is ultimately about a return home. Whether it’s the family, tribe, or village, people will most often send you off saying things like, “Come home as soon as you can!” or “Complete the mission then hurry back,” or “We will miss you! Don’t forget to call or write!”
I wrote this song because I found myself wondering about the possibility of a quieter voice, one that likely gets drowned out amid the clamoring calls for homecoming, one that might actually offer permission to not hurry back, to not even return to the same place, to arrive somewhere entirely new, to be changed.
STAY AT SEA
You set sail all those years ago Now all you want is to bring your weary heart home The only trouble is home doesn’t look the same You should stay at sea Don’t come back from where you came All those ramblers, they told fantastic tales You woke up a believer in the belly of a whale You found your treasure, then you gave it all away You should stay at sea, come back another day You want to tell us all about everything You’ve got stories to tell, songs you wanna sing But the trouble 'round here is nobody listens well Why don’t you stay at sea Just sing a song to yourself You met a woman, she showed things you never knew She told the truth from a different point of view She knew the ache of the world, she saw the hunger in you She said stay at sea You’ll know what to do You keep thinking the next shore will be the one The same home you left, the place you thought you belong This ain’t the end of the world, no it only curves around Stay at sea Until what you seek is found You should stay at sea Don’t come back from where you came
