THE THREAD | Time to slow things down
Friends,
I have been so grateful to share The Thread with you every week for the past seven months. It has helped me keep a steady pace and discipline to my writing, and I've enjoyed sharing my work in a way that has felt more direct and personal for me -- right at a time when it's been so easy to feel disconnected. Getting to share this with you every week is one of the ways I've been carried through this past year.
Seasons are changing, and I am sensing a shift in my time and attention. Starting this week, I am going to change The Thread to monthly instead of weekly in order to give me some space to focus on some other projects. Hopefully this shift can also provide some relief to your inbox. (Sometimes I imagine an army of inboxes shouting back at me, "Dude, all of these things are piling up!")
As I'm making this shift for the next season, I figured I'd mark this transition by sharing one of my favorite poems by William Stafford, which partly inspired the name of The Thread. I hope you enjoy it.
THE WAY IT IS
by William Stafford
There’s a thread you follow. It goes among
things that change. But it doesn’t change.
People wonder about what you are pursuing.
You have to explain about the thread.
But it is hard for others to see.
While you hold it you can’t get lost.
Tragedies happen; people get hurt
or die; and you suffer and get old.
Nothing you do can stop time’s unfolding.
You don’t ever let go of the thread.
